It’s pretty obvious that we all adore the summer season for all the goodness it brings. Warm weather and sunshine, patio drinks, cottage weekends, swimming in the pool, picnics in the park and bike rides to the beach. What’s not to like, right?
Summer is sweet enough as it is. I agree However, today I’m talking some summer time swap outs that you may not have thought of. They are sure to make your summertime even sweeter and can help you live a little bit more holistically.
FRUIT COCKTAILS OVER HOT TODDIES
Winter brings hot toddies and steamy hot cocoa, but summer provides us with so many delicious, seasonal fruits that provide a variety of nutrients. They are so versatile and one of my favourite ways to make use of them is in creative cocktail creations. Add an extra dose of antioxidant to that sangria with berries or alkalize your body with fresh seasonal lemonade. Check out my Watermelon Lime Mixer.
ALL NATURAL SUN PROTECTION FOR YOUR SKIN
One look around the beach you will see people dowsing themselves in sunscreen. Yes, sun protection is important, however, have you ever thought of what is in the product your slathering all over your skin. Can you even pronounce the ingredients?
Here are some holistic and natural sun protection products that I love.
NATURE TRUMPS NETFLIX
We look forward to the few months of summer we get all year, so make sure you take advantage while it lasts. Winter is the time for hibernating and cuddling up with your loved one (or flavour of the month) to catch up on all seasons of Orange is the New Black. Save it for polar vortex times. It will still be there. And while the sun is still shining, get off your butt off the couch and get outside to reap the stress reducing and spiritually grounding effects of our mother earth.
ADD SOME VEGGIES TO YOUR GRILL
Grill masters often think of what meat product they can grill up next. The summer time grill challenge that I’m putting out to you is to get inventive and grill up veggies! Avocado is the new trend and tastes delicious after a BBQ-ing then paired with some homemade salsa. Bottom line: Eat more plants!
Make sure to pop a picture of your grilled veggies on social media and tag me in it! @stephanifenk
SUNSHINE OVER SUPPLEMENTATION
Summer is the time to top up those Vitamin D reserves. Vit D is important for regulating mood, enhancing bone health, preventing heart disease, moderating the immune system and reducing the risk of cancer (among many other benefits). As we come out of the winter season, our reserves are at our lowest. Winter is the time to supplement, but summer is the time to nourish your body with glorious rays. Spending 20 minutes in the sunshine sans SPV, in shorts and a t-shirt, can give you your daily dose of the sunshine vitamin.
